Hello, Anthony:
The Technology for Effective and
Efficient Learning (TEEL) Lab at Carnegie Mellon University and NISOD are
seeking eight (8) community colleges to participate in a beta deployment of
Social and Interactive Learning at Community Colleges (SAIL-CC).
What Is SAIL-CC?
As part of a National Science
Foundation funded grant, the TEEL Lab and NISOD are collaborating to create a
more engaging and inclusive curriculum for teaching two (2) entry-level courses
in the domain of computer science and information technology (CS/IT) at
community colleges. Syllabi for the two courses are attached. More information
can be found here.
What are the benefits to Guilford
Technical Community College for joining SAIL-CC?
Sail()
Curricula. Participating institutions can offer entry-level CS/IT courses
developed jointly by Carnegie Mellon University and community colleges across
the country.
Sail()
Platform. Participating institutions can access the Sail() Platform, a
research-driven learning and teaching platform, designed to incorporate
project-based learning and data-informed teaching best practices while
minimizing instructor workloads.
Professional
Development. Participating faculty can join in-person/remote training in
Project-Based Learning (PBL), Data-Informed Teaching (DIT), and Culturally
Responsive Teaching (CRT), as well as customizing Sail() courses to meet
institutional needs.
Research
Opportunities. Participating institutions can opt-in to collaborate on
research proposals and studies.
Broader Impact.
Participating institutions can contribute data for research that will benefit
community colleges, especially minority serving institutions, across the
country.
Compensation.
Participating institutions are compensated for their instructors to join ~77
hours of professional development in 2022 and ~24 hours of professional
development in 2023 at $40/hour. They are also compensated for forwarding data
for research each year ($500).
What are Guilford Technical
Community College’s commitments when joining SAIL-CC?
Onboarding.
Colleges will integrate their learning management system with Sail() and add the two (2) SAIL-CC courses to the course
catalog in time for student enrollments in Fall 2022.
Professional
Development. Colleges will designate an instructor to participate in
approximately 77 hours of professional development in 2022 and approximately 24
hours of professional development in 2023.
Course Delivery.
The designated instructors will deliver each of the two (2) courses at least
once per academic year from Fall 2022 to Spring 2025
(3 academic years).
Data Management
for Research. Colleges will forward educational data to TEEL for
IRB-approved research activities.
